Less Litters for BC's Bunny

osstewardship

#FunFactFriday Did you know that Nuttall's Cottontails in BC will have less litters than the ones in the USA? These BC rabbits will have around 2-3 litters every year, each producing around 6 kits. While this already seems like a lot of rabbits, the populations in states like Oregon can produce 3, 4, or even 5 litters per year. This is thought to happen because of the longer breeding season in the USA compared to the BC population. In BC, their breeding season ranges from March to July, while they are thought to start as early as January in the USA. The breeding season is dependant on food availability, so the longer winters limit the amount of litters these bunnies will have.
