Spotted Bats

osstewardship

Did you know that the Spotted Bat is the only bat species whose echolocation calls can be heard by humans?

They got their name because of the big white spots on their back amidst otherwise dark fur. These spots can be seen from far away, which makes it easier to identify this species. Another very distinguishing feature is their large ears.

Spotted bats are considered one of the rarest bats in North America. Unlike other bats, they are solitary and territorial. They like to roost in cliffs, and like all bat species they usually roost near wetland areas where insects are plentiful. This means they are yet another species that rely on riparian ecosystems.

If you'd like to learn more about bats and the other spooky critters we have in the Okanagan-Similkameen, come visit our booth at the All Hallows Festival in Osoyoos this Sunday, October 27th! https://www.widearts.ca/osoyoos-all-hallows-festival
